Martin Parr was commissioned by the High Museum of Art to create a portfolio of images of Atlanta and the surrounding area as part of an on-going series of commissions, Picturing the South. This is a unique opportunity for Parr; his first commission by a major American art museum. While he has worked in the US in the past and is widely collected and followed outside of America, this assignment will be an introduction to his work for many in the United States.
Parr, one of the Magnum photo agency's most prolific members, brought his unique viewpoint and iconic style to the project. He traveled to Atlanta twice, once in October of 2010 and, again, in April of 2011.
His circuitous path led him through the Atlanta neighborhoods of Little Five Points, Midtown, Virginia Highlands, The West Side, Buckhead and beyond as he searched for the "hot spots" that super-charge his creative vision.
The images will be on display at the High Museum of Art in June, 2012 and much larger selection will be available in the Contrasto publication that will be released at the same time.
